Post Tramatic Stress Disorder Treatment for Children, Adolescents, and Adults
PTSD and Trauma Treatment in Manchester, NH
One of the first things I tell patients and families is that they do not need to walk in and recount every detail of what happened in order to get help.
Trauma does not require a full narrative before treatment can begin, and pushing for one too soon can do more harm than good.
What I need to understand first is how the trauma is showing up now, in sleep, in relationships, in a child’s behavior at school, in an adult’s ability to feel safe in their own life, and build a plan from there.

How We Approach PTSD and Trauma Treatment
Trauma-informed care means the pace and structure of treatment are built around safety and stability first, not around extracting a detailed account on day one.
Our approach typically includes:
Careful, patient-led evaluation
We assess how trauma is affecting daily functioning, sleep, mood, and relationships, at a pace the patient can tolerate, without requiring a full account of the traumatic event before care can begin.
Screening beyond the obvious
Trauma is not always a single dramatic event. It can include ongoing situations like neglect, medical trauma, community violence, or a difficult loss, and patients do not always recognize these experiences as trauma on their own.
Coordination with trauma-focused therapists
Approaches like Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and EMDR are specialized, evidence-based therapies for PTSD. We coordinate closely with therapists trained specifically in these approaches, since they are most effectively delivered by someone with dedicated training in them.
Medication management when appropriate
Medication does not erase traumatic memories, but it can help manage specific symptoms such as severe anxiety, depression, or sleep disruption, including nightmares, that are interfering with a patient's ability to function and engage in therapy.
Family and caregiver guidance
For younger patients especially, we help caregivers understand what they are seeing and how to respond in ways that support healing rather than unintentionally reinforcing fear.
Ongoing follow-up
Trauma symptoms can resurface at different life stages, sometimes years later. We reassess regularly rather than treating recovery as a single finish line.
Signs and Symptoms of Post Tramatic Stress Disorder
Trauma responses vary widely by age, and young children in particular often cannot articulate what they are experiencing in words.

In young children, I often see:
- Regression to earlier behaviors, such as bedwetting or clinginess, after previously being past that stage
- Reenacting the traumatic event through play, sometimes repetitively
- New or intensified fears, nightmares, or difficulty sleeping alone
- Physical symptoms like stomachaches, with no clear medical cause
- Emotional outbursts or shutting down that seem disconnected from the current moment

In adolescents, common signs include:
- Avoidance of people, places, or situations connected to the trauma
- Increased irritability, anger, or risk-taking behavior, including substance use
- Intrusive memories, nightmares, or feeling suddenly "on edge" without an obvious trigger
- Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected from friends and family
- Difficulty concentrating in school or a noticeable drop in performance

In adults, PTSD often presents as:
- Flashbacks or intrusive memories that feel like reliving the event
- Hypervigilance, an exaggerated startle response, or difficulty relaxing even in safe settings
- Avoidance of reminders of the trauma, sometimes to the point of significantly limiting daily life
- Persistent negative beliefs about oneself or the world that developed after the trauma
- Sleep disruption, including nightmares, that has continued well beyond the event itself
If these patterns sound familiar, whether in yourself or your child, an evaluation can help make sense of what is happening and open the door to treatment that actually addresses it.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. We focus first on how you are currently doing, your symptoms, your safety, and your daily functioning. A detailed account of the trauma itself is not required to begin care, and in trauma-focused therapy, that work happens gradually and only when the patient is ready, not on demand.
Yes. Young children can be significantly affected by trauma even without a clear verbal memory of it, and it often shows up through behavior, play, sleep, or regression rather than through anything they can describe in words. This is part of why caregiver observations are such an important part of evaluating trauma in young children.
Difficult experiences understandably cause stress and short-term symptoms for almost everyone. PTSD involves symptoms that persist beyond a month, are significant enough to interfere with daily functioning, and typically include a specific pattern of re-experiencing the event, avoidance, negative changes in mood or thinking, and heightened arousal or reactivity.
We coordinate closely with therapists trained specifically in EMDR and other trauma-focused therapies, since these are specialized modalities best delivered by clinicians with dedicated training in them. Our role includes evaluation, medication management when appropriate, and making sure your overall care is coordinated.
Complex trauma results from repeated or prolonged exposure to distressing experiences, such as ongoing neglect or chronic instability, rather than a single incident. It often affects a person's sense of identity, trust, and emotional regulation more broadly, and treatment usually needs to move more gradually than it might for a single-event trauma.
